Pierre Lafond opened the Montecito Market in the Summer of 1964. Over the years the Market evolved, from its rather simple beginnings, into a somewhat more complicated enterprise serving the needs of a community that has also evolved.

During those years we added three adjoining stores, two dress shops and an Upstairs Home Gallery. The market became a social gathering place where people meet after tennis, or come to negotiate deals over coffee.

In the 1960s Montecito consisted mostly of Captains of Industry who had retired from large enterprises in the East or Midwest. Today most are working families, their enterprises may be elsewhere but easy travel and communication permits them to live wherever they please, so why not live in paradise.
